Congress raises fuel standard to 35mpg by 2020

In a dramatic attempt to increase efficiency congress voted to raise fuel standards to 35mpg by 2020. What does this mean?

Well, the most efficient car GM has is the Korean made Chevy Aveo with gets 34mpg highway / 27 mpg city. In contrast the hybrid car Toyota Prius gets about 60mpg. The current fuel average for US cars & trucks is about 20mpg. In contrast in Japan it is 45mpg; even Europe has 37mpg now and plans to reach 50mpg by 2009.

Sadly, the retrograde mentality of GM has made it lose 39 billion dollars this year and it might go under. People are not buying the Gigantor SUV trucks anymore. GM should have focused on producing hybrids, not hummers.
