Mystery of Easter Island

It is the most remote place on earth and yet here an ancient civilization flourished with its own written language called Rongorongo. Today it is possible to travel from Chile to Easter Island and stay at a hotel. The island is now called Pascua meaning Easter in Spanish and the islanders are called Pascuans.

However the Islanders call themselves Rapa Nui and want their independence from Chile. The government of Chile has turned the island into a tourist attraction with hotels and restaurants.

Much can be learned by looking at the past. This civilization was destroyed by the west due to disease and wars. the Rapa Nui people were made slaves and the wooden tablets containing their Rongorongo language burned by priests.

Little remains, except for the enigmatic stone heads known as Moai, of the mystery of Easter Island.
